Costs. Conventional radio/data does work out cheaper in the longer term as once it’s paid for there’s little in the way of ongoing costs. But also consider the fact that drivers may think PDA’s are a better option and be prepared to pay extra to have one. Most companies actually make money from this by charging the drivers say £5 per week extra while only paying a contract rate of £10 per month. In doing this, your covered if you end up with some PDAs on the shelf during the quiet periods in the year.
Life Expectancy Conventional data units are pretty tough with an expected service life of 10 years +++. It’s debatable if a PDA device will have such a life span but then again, if it’s on a contract, you can always request a new one when the contracts up! This is an important consideration if your thinking of purchasing rather than contracting.
Range. No question here, PDA’s work right across the UK but you need to seriously consider just how much of you work actually relies on long range communications bearing in mind that virtually every driver has a mobile these days.
Speed. .You may have heard reports of PDAs being slow compared to conventional data, this is certainly not the case with ours! Conventional data is slightly faster but the difference is insignificant.
Reliability Conventional data, scores high for reliability as backup systems are simple and don’t cost much. PDA data relies on both your Internet connection and the mobile network remaining stable. Internet backup is possible via a wireless device with slight reduction in performance but the loss of the mobile data network can cause problems. In such cases, we provide a fall back service that keeps your mobiles working but with a very slight reduction in speed however, most of our companies operate on a special private network that has never suffered any loss of data whatsoever!
